Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
I am writing this letter to inform you of my policy towards the use of Social Media in the classroom. Social Media is an ever growing presence in the lives of today’s youth and although it has the potential to be a dangerous form of communication, I feel very strong in my belief that it does have a place in the classroom. Throughout the year our class will be exploring and becoming more familiar with various forms of Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, online blogs, and Instagram to name a few). Although your child may already be familiar with these websites in their personal lives we will be learning how to use them for educational purposes. We will also be learning how to use Social Media in a safe manner and how to properly protect your personal information from strangers.
I am personally very active on these types of websites and maintain and update a professional Twitter, Facebook, and online blog. I find these to be very useful and effective ways to communicate with parents, guardians and students to keep them informed about what is happening in our class and to answer any questions that may arise through the course of the year.
I encourage you to visit some of my Social Media pages and look for yourself to see just how effective these pages are at keeping parents and guardians informed about the day to day happenings in our class. My address for my online blog is http://emilyjon.blogspot.ca , my professional Twitter account is @ezwier32, and our class Facebook page is “Miskooseepi Junior Kindergarten Class.”
I have also included a list of websites that detail the great ways in which Social Media is being used in classrooms all around the world. If you have any apprehension about exposing your child to the world of Social Media I encourage you to check these websites out.
The Websites are:
If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to call me at the school, or email me at ezwier32@gmail.com.
